Workshop Scope: Scenario-Based Cybersecurity Training for PLC-Based ICS

Objective

The primary goal of this workshop is to develop a scenario-based cybersecurity training program tailored for Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)-based Industrial Control Systems (ICS). This program will blend practical classroom instruction with hands-on laboratory exercises to teach essential cybersecurity concepts in an immersive and engaging way.

Date range / Location

23 November 0800-1500 location Tucson Arizona, specifics will be provided to registrants.

Core Concept

The workshop is structured around the design of realistic cybersecurity scenarios based on real-world ICS attacks. These scenarios will be crafted from comprehensive attack-defense tactics drawn from the MITRE ATT&CK® Navigator, providing participants with exposure to one of the most exhaustive resources for understanding ICS cyber threats and corresponding mitigation strategies.

Learning Approach

Participants will be introduced to ICS cybersecurity terminology, tactics, and strategies through a visual and interactive learning environment. This preparatory phase will ensure participants are ready for hands-on lab experiments, where their focus will shift towards applying what they’ve learned in real-world-inspired attack-defense simulations.

Red Team vs. Blue Team Exercises

Students will be divided into Red Teams and Blue Teams:

  • Red Teams: Responsible for planning and executing simulated attack techniques.
  • Blue Teams: Tasked with formulating and deploying the corresponding defense strategies.

This structure fosters a deeper understanding of both offensive and defensive cybersecurity principles, as participants experience both sides of ICS security challenges.

Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  1. Gain practical skills in designing and implementing attack and defense strategies within ICS environments.
  2. Understand key cybersecurity concepts and terminology relevant to PLC-based systems.
  3. Develop teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities through Red vs. Blue Team collaboration.
  4. Build confidence in handling real-world cyber incidents by simulating attacks and deploying mitigation techniques.
