Building Skills for Open Science and Data Science

What Are We Doing?

We’re embarking on an exciting journey to build data science capabilities and enhance research across diverse fields. Our activities aim to support researchers, students, and professionals in mastering essential skills that can accelerate research projects, foster collaboration, and tackle large-scale challenges.

Here’s an overview of our key activities:

  1. The Shell and Git: Learning to use the command line and Git for version control is foundational. These tools help manage projects, track changes in files, and collaborate seamlessly with others.
  2. Open Science: We’re embracing the principles of open science, ensuring that research is accessible, transparent, and collaborative.
  3. Managing Data: Effective data management is crucial for organizing, storing, and preserving data. We’ll be focusing on how to handle large datasets efficiently and ensure they’re accessible to others.
  4. Project Management: Organizing projects well can make all the difference. We’ll explore tools and techniques to streamline project workflows and enhance productivity.
  5. Documentation and Communication: Good communication ensures that our work is clear and understandable. We’ll practice documenting processes and sharing results with clarity.
  6. Version Control: Using Git and GitHub, we’ll collaborate on documents, data, and code, ensuring that changes are tracked, and everyone stays on the same page.
  7. Reproducibility I & II: A key aspect of research is making sure that results can be repeated. We’ll explore how to achieve repeatability and how using containers, like Docker, can enhance the reproducibility of research projects.

What Are We Aiming To Achieve?

Our primary goals include:

  • Developing Data Science Skills: Participants will gain hands-on experience with tools and techniques for data analysis, machine learning, and data visualization.
  • Accelerating Research: By learning efficient ways to manage data and projects, we can speed up the research process and achieve results faster.
  • Building Networks: Collaboration is key. We aim to create a supportive network of participants to share knowledge, ideas, and solutions.
  • Supporting Each Other: The community aspect of this initiative is vital. We’ll help one another grow and apply new skills to real-world challenges.

Key Skills and Concepts We’ll Cover

  • Project and Data Management: Implement plans to manage your projects and data efficiently.
  • Foundational Open Science Skills (FOSS): Discover the essential skills needed for open science practices.
  • Command Line Mastery: Learn commands used in command-line applications to automate and streamline workflows.
  • File Transfer Tools: Understand how to move data between different repositories using software tools.
  • Version Control with Git and GitHub: Apply these tools to collaborate on documents, data, and software applications.
  • Data Science Techniques: Explore algorithms for data classification, regression, and machine learning to build predictive models.
  • Reproducible Research: Create research outputs that others can reproduce, using tools like online document writing software, code, and data visualization libraries.
  • FAIR & CARE Data Principles: Learn how to apply these principles to ensure data is findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable.
  • Docker and Containers: Understand how Docker can be used to ensure that your projects are easily reproducible by others.

By the end of this program, you’ll be equipped with tools and skills to contribute to open science, manage data projects more effectively, and collaborate with a global community of researchers and professionals. Let’s take on these challenges together and support each other as we grow!
